Serienmail and the new Outlook for Windows

For all Office 365 subscribers, the classic Outlook will be gradually converted to the new Outlook by Microsoft starting on January 6, 2025. This concept offers a major advantage for Microsoft. In a few years, the functions of Outlook will only have to be programmed for one platform. This will enable Microsoft to reduce development costs. This version has some limitations. The new Outlook does not work with Serienmail. It is not possible to query the license for SerienbriefPDF.

Classic or new Outlook?

I have an Office 365 subscription. How can I tell if I’m using the classic or the new Outlook?

The easiest way to tell whether you’re using the classic or the new Outlook is to look at the ribbon.

Ribbon in Outlook classic

In the classic Outlook ribbon, you will find the File tab on the far left. Depending on your Outlook settings, you will see a slider on the far right labeled Try the new Outlook.

In the new Outlook, you will see a slider on the far right labeled The new Outlook. You can also use this slider to switch from the new to the classic Outlook. To continue using Serienmal, you have no choice but to switch back and forth between the classic and the new Outlook using the slider.

Do you want to avoid the automatic changeover?

Before your Outlook is automatically converted, you will receive a message from Microsoft, a so-called In-App notification. You can disable the automatic conversion in the Outlook options in the General section.

Another way to prevent the automatic conversion is to adjust the registry. Insert the DWORD NewOutlookMigrationUserSetting with the value 0 into the following registry branch.

Registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\preferences
NewOutlookMigrationUserSetting=dword:00000000
A value of 0 prevents the change.
A value of 1 allows the change.

Important for you to know: The new Outlook throws many proven concepts of the classic Outlook overboard. There is no support for COM add-ins. Custom macros are no longer possible. VBA is no longer supported. You cannot control the new Outlook from Access, Excel or Word.

Serienmail is technically a COM add-in. Due to the changes in the new Outlook described above, it cannot work with the new Outlook. This does not only apply to Serienmail. All external Outlook extensions are affected by these changes.

The new Outlook for Windows can be extended via web add-ins. The possibilities of web add-ins are still limited compared to COM add-ins. Microsoft will incorporate further functions over the next few years.

We at IT-Service Ruhr are monitoring this development very closely. As soon as web add-ins provide the functions, we need for Serienmail, we will also develop Serienmail for the new Outlook.

Until then, the only option available to you is to use the slider to switch back and forth between the classic Outlook and the new Outlook. This is currently the only way to continue working with the Serienmail.
